Egon Schiele

"Numerous self-portraits portray an uninhibited exhibitionist, but in reality Schiele was said to be shy and sensitive. Just as he had begun to achieve commercial success--a large exhibition of his work at the 1918 Viennese Secession--Schiele contracted the Spanish flu. His last work is a moving portrait drawing of his wife, who died in the same epidemic the day after the drawing was made; she was six months pregnant. Schiele died three days later at the age of twenty-eight."
